"Even though you've bought the best security products, some people will break through," he said, dressed in a dark suit, white shirt and tie. "There's no sure-fire way to protect yourself. You have to manage the risk. There's no way you can eliminate it."
Mitnick, 37, was released from prison earlier this year. Under the terms of his probation, he was barred from any contact with computers and from speaking publicly about technology-related topics. He successfully challenged the conditions of his release and won federal approval to pursue some computer-related work, including the Giga conference.
"Security is a dynamic process," Mitnick told attendees. "The key is not only detection but reaction in time for damage control."
