Serious doubts remain over the security of the Wireless Equivalent Privacy protocol as firms rush to clear the cables. About one in four UK companies is looking to wireless local area networks (WLANs) to increase the flexibility of their infrastructure, according to recent research. However, serious doubts remain over the security of the Wireless Equivalent Privacy (WEP) protocol, which is designed to secure data over wireless links.

Research group Rhetorik interviewed 80 IT managers at small to medium-sized firms, and found that 27 percent plan to install WLAN equipment in the next 12 months. However, for many security remains a key concern.
