Are network intrusion detection systems (NIDS) still relevant? With the emphasis shifting to network intrusion protection in the last two years, this technology looks like it is on its last legs. But is it? Related to intrusion detection and protection is the notion of planting honeypots-fake systems that trick hackers into leaving their hacking signatures. But some have said that honeypots lure hackers more than they deter, like bees to honey. So what is their true value?

These and other network protection questions were vigorously tackled by network experts in last month's Network Computing Asia's Network Security Symposium in Singapore, which for the first time in its three-year history, dwelled on one single topic: Intrusion detection and protection.
