RedHat: cyrus-sasl buffer overflow vulnerability
Summary
Summary
Cyrus SASL is an implementation of the Simple Authentication and SecurityLayer, a method for adding authentication support to connection-basedprotocols. Cyrus SASL versions 2 prior to 2.1.10 include a number ofbuffer overflow vulnerabilities:Insufficient buffer length checking in user name canonicalization. Thisissue would be hard to exploit, but would allow a remote user to executearbitrary code on the system. When performing authentication using LDAP, saslauthd does not allocateenough memory when it needs to escape special characters in the usernameand realm. This issue may be easy to remotely exploit. The Log writer might not have allocated memory for the trailing in amessage. This issue is probably hard to exploit, although it is possible toaffect the logging data with at least anonymous authentication. All users of Cyrus-SASL on Red Hat Linux 8.0 are advised to upgrade to theerratum packages containing Cyrus SASL version 2.1.10 which is not affectedby these vulnerabilities. Other Red Hat Linux releases are not affected bythis vulnerability as they included Cyrus-SASL version 1.5.x.
Solution
Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata
relevant to your system have been applied.
To update all RPMs for your particular architecture, run:
rpm -Fvh [filenames]
where [filenames] is a list of the RPMs you wish to upgrade. Only those
RPMs which are currently installed will be updated. Those RPMs which are
not installed but included in the list will not be updated. Note that you
can also use wildcards (*.rpm) if your current directory *only* contains the
desired RPMs.
Please note that this update is also available via Red Hat Network. Many
people find this an easier way to apply updates. To use Red Hat Network,
launch the Red Hat Update Agent with the following command:
up2date
This will start an interactive process that will result in the appropriate
RPMs being upgraded on your system.
